How We Built Our Raised Beds From Scratch (Zone 8b)

March 31, 2026

When we decided to build raised beds, we didn't just want to throw some wood together and fill it with dirt. We wanted to do it right — beds that would last, drain properly, and give our plants the best possible start.

Here's everything we did, step by step.

Why Raised Beds?

In Zone 8b Texas, the native soil is often clay-heavy, compacted, and drains poorly. Raised beds let you start with a completely controlled growing environment — better drainage, better aeration, and soil you've chosen yourself.

We also love how raised beds reduce weeding, make it easier to protect plants from pests, and are genuinely easier on your back.

Materials We Used

We went with cedar — specifically 2x10 cedar boards. Here's why:

  • Naturally rot-resistant: Cedar holds up for 10-15 years without any treatment
  • No chemicals: Unlike pressure-treated lumber, cedar won't leach anything into your soil
  • Beautiful: It weathers to a gorgeous silver-gray over time

Our beds are 4 feet wide by 8 feet long by 10 inches tall. The 4-foot width is intentional — you should always be able to reach the center from either side without stepping in the bed.

The Soil Mix

This is where most people go wrong. Don't use native soil in your raised beds.

We use a modified Mel's Mix:

  • 1/3 compost (blended from multiple sources)
  • 1/3 peat moss or coconut coir
  • 1/3 coarse vermiculite

This mix is light, drains beautifully, and holds moisture without getting waterlogged. In Zone 8b summers, moisture retention matters more than almost anything else.

What We'd Do Differently

  1. Build more beds from the start. We started with two and immediately wished we had four.
  2. Add drip irrigation on day one. Hand watering in a Texas July is brutal.
  3. Put down cardboard before filling. It smothers grass underneath and decomposes into extra organic matter.

The Results

Our first growing season was a revelation. Tomatoes that reached 6 feet tall, peppers that produced until November, and herbs that grew faster than we could use them.

Raised beds are the best gardening decision we've ever made. We'll never go back to in-ground growing.
